1921 - The first play-by-play broadcast of a baseball game was given by KDKA radio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The action was described by Harold Arlin as the Pirates beat Philadelphia 8-5. Today KDKA still airs the Pirates.
1936 - At the Olympic Games in Berlin, African American athlete Jesse Owens broke the Olympic record in the 200-meter race. By the end of the Olympic Games, Owens had won four gold medals. German Chancellor Adolf Hitler had planned the Games to be a showcase of Aryan supremacy, but Owens turned them into his own personal victory.
1960 - In an unprecedented action, two major league baseball clubs traded managers. Detroit Tigers manager Jimmy d**es went to manage the Cleveland Indians whose old manager, Joe Gordon, went to manage the Tigers.
