Staircases at Hogwarts
Hogwarts has 142 staircases: “wide, sweeping ones; narrow, rickety ones; some that led somewhere different on a Friday; some with a vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump” (SS8). We know about only a few of these staircases.
Stone staircase – in front of Hogwarts Castle a stone staircase leads up to the great oak front doors
Marble staircase in the Entrance Hall – a wide marble staircase in the Entrance Hall leads up to first floor
1st stone staircase in the Entrance Hall – behind a door to one side of the marble staircase is a stone staircase that goes down to the Hufflepuff common room and the kitchens
2nd stone staircase in the Entrance Hall – behind a door to the other side of the marble staircase is a stone staircase that goes down to the dungeons.
Staircase to Dumbledore's office – this spiral staircase, guarded by a stone gargoyle, moves magically upward, like an escalator
Staircase with the trick step – a tapestry hides the entrance to this staircase, which has a trick step halfway up; if you step on it, your foot sinks and you are caught until someone else pulls you out; Harry got trapped in this step and was almost caught by Snape and Filch but was rescued by Moody ; Neville frequently forgot about this particular step and had to be pulled out more than once ; other staircases in Hogwarts have trick steps as well.
Staircases in the Gryffindor common room – two spiral staircases are in the Gryffindor common room; one leads into the boys’ dormitories and one into the girls' dormitories. Interestingly, the girls’staircase is enchanted so when a boy steps on it, a siren wails and the staircase is temporarily transfigured into a slippery slide, sending him and anyone else sailing to the floor; however, the boys’ staircase does not have the same enchantment — according to Hogwarts, A History, the founders believed that girls were more trustworthy than boys .
